CATHEDRAL SQUARE.
COUNCIL'S PLAN OPPOSED. CITIZENS' PUBLIC MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A public meeting, convened by Mr. George Gould, was held yesterday afternoon, to protest against the Christchurch City Council's proposal to erect conveniences in the centre of Cathedral Square. The Chamber of Commerce hall was packed to overflowing, and the landing of the building was filled. The crowd even overflowed outside. A motion in the form of a pledge to resist the execution of the proposals was carried unanimously. Prominent men added their voice to the protest in speeches that were all greeted with enthusiastic applause. About 300 people who were unable to find room *in the hall held an overflow meeting outside, and after hearing the addresses carried the same resolution.
