AN AUSTRALIAN DISCUSSION. " GOLF NOT AN EVIL." The question of Sunday games was discussed in the South Australian Legislative Council recently. The Hon. W. tiannaford moved that the repeal of a by-law by the Wallaroo Corporation *to permit of games being played on Sunday in the district under its control bo disallowed. He said that a by-law imposed a fine ot £lO upon persons playing football, cricket and like games on Wallaroo oval and other public places on Sundays. If the corporation had struck out the penalty and allowed the by-law to stand it would have been better. . The Wallaroo Golf Club, said Mr. Hannalord, had asked to be allowed to play golf at certain times oil Sunday, and their request had been the first step in the repeal of the by-law. Five members of Wallaroo Council had voted for the repeal of the by-law, and ono member had voted against it. Almost 50 per cent, of the ratepayers of Wallaroo had signed a petition indicating that they were opposed to the playing of Sunday games. Another Member: Ls it an evil to play golf on Sunday ? The last warning against Sunday golfing at the Elsternvvick public links wfts issued on a recent Sunday by the Brighton Council, says a Melbourne paper. In future the council intends to prosecute those who indulge in a Sunday round. A council official warned players (hat they would be prosecuted for the next offence. The usual Sunday crowd of about 200 went round during the day.
