RUGBY LEAGUE TEST.
VICTORY FOR ENGLAND. FINE WIN AT BRISBANE. (Received June 23. 8.25 p.m.) BRISBANE, Juno 23. A record crowd saw the first Rugby League test match between England and Australia, which England won by 15 points to 12. The teams were:— ENGLAND. Fullback: Sullivan (captain.) Threequarters: Askin, Brough, Oliver, Elarby. Halves: Rees, Fairclough. Forwards: Burgess, Bentham, Bowman, Sloman, Horton, Fildes. AUSTRALIA. Fullback: Craig. Threequarters : Aynsley, Gorman (captain), Hardy Freestone. Halves: Laws, Edwards. Forwards: Steinhort, Justice, Yorke, Dempsey, Armbruster, Treweeke. The match was up to international standard. England won a deserved victory. The team had improved wonderfully since the match against Queensland. They dazzled the onlookers by their tbreequarter work, dribbling and intercepting and hustling forward play. It was expected that the speed of the Australians would tell in the second half, but in the gruelling latter part of the game the visitors retained their form and speed, finishing strongly. England built up a substantial lead of 13 to 7 in the first half, and in spite of a determined effort by Australia to snatch the victory, England successfully held them in check. Faulty kicking on the part of the Australians lost them points. The scorers for England were Fairclough, Horton, Elarby and Sullivan, and for Australia, Armbruster, Craig, Freestone and Aynsley.
