ELIMINATION OF WASTE. CONFERENCE "AT WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday. A conference of the heads of departments of the New Zealand Railways was called on Saturday by tlie general manager, Mr. H. H. Sterling, with the object of laying the foundations of mutual confidence and to prevent unnecessary duplication of effort. The effective co-operation of all departments is being sought in order to eliminate wasteful procedure. The South Island was represented by its divisional superintendent. The Prime Minister, as Minister of Railways, attended, and assured the conference that the Government had every confidence in the new general manager. He asked the officers to give the manager all the assistance they could in carrying out railway business.
