SIR GEORGE FOWLDS.
PACIFIC CLUB TRIBUTE. Iti recognition of the honour recently conferred upon him by the King, Sir George Fowlds was yesterday the guest of honour at a luncheon of members of the Pacific Club. There was a large attendance, Mr. James Robertson presiding. Mr. Robertson said Sir George had been a member of the club since its inception, and they all felt the club had shared in the honour. Sir George came to New Zealand with little money to carve out a livelihood for himself in the colony. This he had done, and had served the country faithfully and well. The honour had been well earned, and he trusted Sir George and Lady Fowlds would live long to enjoy it. The gathering then stood and sang " For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," concluding with cheers. In reply, Sir George said any public service he" had rendered had always given him the greatest personal satisfaction. His greatest reward had been the many friends he had made in all walks of life. The more they did for other people, the more came back into their own lives. (Applause.) He thanked members of the club for the honour they had done him.
