The High Commissioner for Australia/ Sir Granville Ryrie, in presenting the report on Nauru Island to the Mandates Commission, referred to the dearth of Chinese labour. He said the Administrator, Mr. W. A. Newman, held himself personally responsible for seeing that the workers received satisfactory treatment, and that the employers fulfilled their obligations. The Chinese in 1927 remitted £l2 500 of their savings to China. He outlined several schemes for the inculcation of a spirit of service and of character-forming which were being carried out. He drew attention to the spirit with which the Nauru Islanders were taking up games. A cinema, under strict censorship, was proving of great educational value The noticeable reduction in the deathrate in 1927, compared with 1926, was due to the untiring devotion of the medical service.
