CARDS ON SUNDAY.
GAME AT VICTORIA PARK.
THREE YOUTHS FINED. Disturbed by a constable while playing cards ill Victoria Park on a Sunday, three youths, Victor Silver, William Basham and Harold Smitli, appeared in the Police Court yesterday, charged with playing cards in a public place on a Sunday. The accused pleaded not guilty. Constable Jones said he was on duty in Victoria Park and saw the three lads playing cards in the children's shelter shed. They said they were playing euchre, but lie had his doubts about that.
One of the boys said the constable had not seen them playing cards. Senior-Sergeant Cummings: This is not the first charge that has been laid. In future cases we will prosecute under the Gaming Act, instead of the by-laws. The worst feature is that the boys here were playing in the children's shelter shed. The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: If you want to play cards on Sunday, go to a private place. Don't frequent places set apart for the use of children. Each of the boys was fined 10s.
