With 23 horses still claiming the double engagement in connection with the Great Northerns, curiosity is naturally prompted as to the prospects of any earning a place with the select number who have their eames enrolled as winners of the two 'ig jumping races. The following is a list of the horses engaged in the respective races—: „ „ _ ... G.N. G.N. Hurdles. Steeples, st. lb. st, lb. The following are the particulars bearing on the respective wins of the five double winners in the two Ellerslie races: G..V. Hurdles. G.N. Steeples. Two miles. About 3i miles. 180.5. Sir Roseberry, Byrs 10 12 .. 11 5 In ticking off the list of horses likely to tackle the double this year, it is perhaps just as well, for the time being, at least, in order to be on fairly safe ground, to limit the reference to horses who have won in both departments, and those to be cited are Wedding March. Brigadier Bill, Beau Cavalier. Maunga. Zircon, Dick, Glcnotus and Kendal. Wedding March won the Great Northern Hurdle Race last year. but the Mangere Steeplechase (which was limited to the hack class) is, so far, the only cross-country event to his credit. Brigadier Bill's best performance over the battens might be cited in connection with the Gonville Hurdle Race, run at Wanganui last spring, in which event he carried 10.12 and beat a field of 10. \ictory in the Egmont Steeplechase and Wanganui Steeplechase is the attractive feat to the credit of Brigadier Bill in his initial efforts over country. Beau Cavalier won the Frankton Hurdle Race at the Waikato meeting last month, in which race he carried 10.0. That Beau Cavalier can stay well he has very amply demonstrated in his efforta over country, and there is some encouragement for his owner to give this horse an opportunity to win the double. Maunga has won in both departments, and, though it is necessary to go back to the summer of 1925 far his i>est performance over the battens, it is junt as well to remember that he registered a good feat at that age when he carried 11.2 to victory in the Auckland Hurdles and ran the two miles in 3.44. Last year Maunga won the Wanganui Steeplechase, and in the decision of the Great Northern Steeplechase he filled second place. Zircon won the Century Hurdles at Wanganui last year, and at Ellerslie he scored a victory in the Tamaki Steeplechase. Kendal won the Kingsland Hurdles (2 miles) at Ellerslie this season, but we have to go back to 1925 to find a cross-country event to his credit. This was the Winter Steeplechase. As to Dick and Glenotus, that pair must, I think, bo passed over so far as the hurdle event is concerned. If the matter at stake had to be summed up on the question of age, Wedding March would probably obtain the ■vote, as he is only rising seven years old. But the veteran brigade not infrequently worst their more youthful rivals in jumping contests, and there is some encouragement to give Beau Cavalier preference. STUD NOTES. ENGLISH-BRED DAY COMET.
