ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES

YESTERDAY MORNING'S WORK BY ARCHER. The weather was bright and sunny while training operations ■vrere being conducted at Ellerslie yesterday and there wi)s a good crowd present. The course proper—outside three trestles was available for galloping and the No. 3 grass was also open, while the jumpers had the use of the steeplechase course and the schooling hurdles. The going was heavy and consequently the times were slow. The star item of the morning was a brilliant schooling effort by Beau Cavalier. COURSE PROPER. The first to gallop on the course proper were Thursby and Restaurant, who finished many lengths ahead of Kelso at the end of seven furlongs in 1.41. Thursby and Restaurant were ridden by their respective trainers, R. E. Rrown and W. Gall, so were both carrying fair weights. Ridden by a light boy. Royal Tea reeled off four furlongs very nicely in 53 3-ss. The Tea Tray gelding has improved since his last start and will strip well at the end of next week. A useful effort over four furlongs was allotted to Prinqe Papa, who covered the distance in 56 4-ss. Prince Papa is showing improved condition. With L. Husband in the saddle. Corinax was indulged i.n a sound mile gallop. Accompanied by Piet. he ran the first half in 525. Then he was picked up by The Thorn and completed the full distance in 1.48 4-5 Corinax was going really well at the finish and it was a good effort. After the breakfast interval. Princess Ronnie (Wiggins) and Lomint (Akersten) were first out. They went once round, running the first two furlongs in 29 4-ss. three in 42 2-ss, four in 55 3-ss, five in 1.10 2-5. and the full distance in 2.9 3-ss. Princess Ronnie, on the bit, was about half a length in front and always had Lomint's measure over the last few furlongs. King Emerald (C. Carmont) moved freely while running aeven furlongs in 1.37 2-ss. He was assisted over the last five furlongs by Eager Rose (B. Deeley). who was going very easily at the finish. The final four furlongs were accomplished in 57 2-ss. Respirator (J. Cammick) was going easier than Brampton (J. Buchanan) at the conclusion of four furlongs in 54 l-ss. These hacks are in nice condition to undertake their coming engagements. Modest Boy (W. Ryan) and Tidal (L. Manson) were sent seven furlongs. They ran the first three in 40s, and the full distance ija 1.39 3-5. Whereas Modest Boy was always travelling well. Tidal was ridden out with the whip at the finish. There was not much between Miss Myrtle (light boy) and Dave (H. Dulieu) at the end of four furlongs in 545, although Dave appeared to be going the easier. Sir Archie (Deeley) was going very easily alongside Huephano (C. Carmont) at the conclusion of fpur furlongs in 55 2-ss. Sir Archie relishes heavy going and he is coming on very nicely again. The Cornwall Handicap candidate, Master Doon (J. Conquest) ran his first three furlongs in 31 4-59, four in 57 l-ss. five in 1.11. and a round in 2.11 2-5. The Lucullus gelding was assisted over the last seven furlongs by Storm Fiend, but could not keep with that horse, who went the seven in 1.38 4-5. Another Cornwall Handicap candidate in Cynthia N (S. Tremain) was sent once round, but she was not looking for time Taking 31 3-5s for the first two furlongs, she got to the end of five in 1.14, and the round in 2.13 3-5. Pekatahi (J. Cammick) defeated Karamu (light boy) by a couple of lengths over seven furlongs in 1.41 3-5. Ridden by C. Regan. Karamu had previously jumped a couple of hurdles in good style. Killute (Day) was slightly ahead of Bluespear (light boy), with Royal Trek (Husband). a couple of lengths back at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.39. Bluespear appeared to be doing best at the end. Kamehameha got a break on Scot Free. Importer and Mashoor and beat them over a round in 2.12. Scot Free went a tick better than that, but the other pair were some lengths back. Mashoor being tailed right off. Ballymoy 11. (S. Tremain) covered her first three furlongs in 40s. and completed seven in 1.40 3-5. The imported mare is carrying a bright appearance and did her work well. Judge's Bos (L. Manson) placed four furlongs behind in 53 4-se. Arch Queen (Wiggins) covered the same distance in 54 l-ss. Llewellyn and Kauri Park accomplished a, working gallop over seven furlongs in 1.47. Phaola and The Fox ran five furlongs from the old pogt in MO. J. Lambess" pair have been doing nicely lately, but Phaola will not bo at her best yet awhile. Kawini and Qtiincoma went a mile and a-quarter in 2.27 2-ss. the last round taking 2.13 2-5. Kawini was lame afterwards find he is evidently going to be difficult to get right again. The Great, Northern candidate, Archibald (R McTavish) galloped a mile and a-quarter in good style, running the last round in 2.10 3-5. His stablemate Odin joined in over the last round, but could apt go with Archibald at the finish and was some lengths behind. Marble Mount placed the last seyen furlongs of a mile behind in 1.42. NO. 3 GRASS. Parfait Amour was responsible for six furlongi in 1.19 1-5. Good Boy covered the same distance in 1.20 2-5. THE JUMPERS. Golden Glass <G. Holland) was schooled over tha pony hurdles and made a satisfactory showing. Archeno (E. Garrett) and Salamander (J. Sharkey) were associated in a bout over six hurdles. Archeno outjumped her companion at several fences, but tired toward the end and hit the last hard. Salamander waa only fair. Rahepoto (G. Holland) and Master Noel (J. Sharkey) were tent over the steeplechase fences on the flat and got over safely, the former shaping well. Glenetta (R. Olive) began with them, but tried to shirk the first fence of the double, scrambling over the fence on to the No. 3 grass. She afterwards ran off at the stonewall and was then sent over a couple of pony hurdles, which she did not relish either. Abbot's Delight (H. Dulieu) jumped four pony hurdles carefully. Marita (J. Mephan) and Betty Zane (H. Dulieu) went over the steeplechase fences on the flat twice. They gave a satisfactory display, although Marita nearly unseated his rider at the double. Wee Marble (E. Garrett) and Clockwork (R Olive) accomplished a Tound of the steeplechase fences. For a beginner Wee Marble shaped nuitc well. Clockwork fenced cleanly until he tired near the end and did not take the last few fences too Rafferty <C. Regan) cleared four hurdles k°Beau Cavalier (E. Garrett) delighted the trackwatchers with a dashing exhibilion over a round of the steeplechase fences. Timed from the sodwall round to the same fence, he went 2.46—a very fast round. NOTES FROM THE TRACK. A number of visiting horses reached Ellerslie yesterday, among them being! Aberfeldy, Tuki, Perle de Leon and Comical col, Red Fuchsia, and Geyserland. Aberfeldy, Tuki, Perie de Leon and Comical were out working steadily a few hours after arriving and attracted a lot of attention. , . J. Cammick is to ride Corinax in the Cornwall Handicap. Corinax has done well lately and is working in a Bfyle that suggests he is going to be hard to beat. The brilliant schooling effort recorded by Beau Cavalier yesterday will cause him to remain in favour for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Unless present intentions are altered Beau Cavalier will contest both the Great Northerns. S. Henderson will be his pilot in the Hurdles, but no rider has yet been engaged for the Steeplechase. If Glendowie does not etart, Henderson will also have the mount in the SteepleohaM.

Will Glendowie start in the Great Northern Steeplechase? That is a question many are asking. Nothing definite has yet been announced regarding his programme and much will depend, no doubt, on the way he shapes in the Hunt Club Hurdles on the first day. All the. same usually well-informed people anticipate that he will take his place in the big race. Fit and well Lomint would be favourite for the Cornwall Handicap, but she has had a short preparation and there is a doubt about her being ready, although her name is mentioned in some quarters. In heavy going Lomint is a good mare and is nicely in with 8.4, as she won last year with 8.1. Still, she is not nearly so fit as she was then and Bhe may lack tho necessary condition to win this time. Those who saw Yoma race at Hawera are inclined to favour his chance in the Cornwall Handicap as he showed a good deal of dash in running second in the McRae Memorial Handicap. The Campfire gelding is credited with looking particularly well and it is in his favour that he has previously raced creditably at Ellerslie in the winter. Modest Boy did not perform up to expectations at the autumn meetings and may not have been quite himself, although he ran second at his la3t start. Since then he has made good progress and has been infusing quite a lot of dash into his work. As he is only a little fellow, the high scale of weights at the winter meetings may not be in his favour, but he is so well that it is quite likely he will race in improved fashion. A mudlark who has been doing nicely in his work lately is Sir Archie and it is on the cards he will show form at the coming meeting. Sir Archie is engaged in both the Cornwall Handicap and the Members' Handicap on the opening day, but it is reported that he will run in the short race. The Archiestown gelding finished third in tho second division of tho Members' Handicap last year. NOTES FROM CANTERBURY. RICCARTON TRACK WORK. CHICKWHEAT GALLOPS WELL. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Sagittarius sprinted half a mile in brilliant fashion this morning. The Arrowsmith gelding is a puzzle. He has been galloping well for some time, but his recent performances in public have been disappointing when compared with his smart efforts on tho tracks. Chickwheat gave further evidence this morning of a return to form by beating Battle Colours over a mile. He had an advantage in the weights, but it was a smart gallop. Moratorium went well in a mile gallop and Amor, who finished almost on terms with him. also shaped very satisfactorily, showing stamina as well as speed. Gold Mint moved attractively in a sixfurlong gallop when he beat Sir Roy, with Bronstell a little further back. Gold Mint looks particularly well. Oriflamb bears an improved appearance and his recent track work has gained him many admirers. He always has had speed, and he may stay better with age. His jumping in recent schooling efforts has been good and he should pay his way over hurdles during the winter. The three-year-old colt Homegate, by Autumnus from Fairhaven, has been purchased from Sir George Clifford by G. Murray Aynsley and he will be utilised as a station sire. Sir George Clifford has sold the three-year-old colt Tearaway, by Panmure from Brambletye, to Pyne, Gould. Guinness. Ltd., who were acting for Mr. L. J. Fechney, of Ashburton. Tearaway is a brother to the Champagne Stakes winner Prickles. He is a well-grown colt who, unfortunately, has become affected in the wind. His new owner contemplates using him for stud purposes. Front Rank has been transferred to her new quarters in J. Boyd's stables. She will be kept going steadily through the winter and may be raced at the Grand National Meeting, though winter weights : will not suit her as well as lighter burdens. WANGANUI NOTES. BRIGADIER BILL'S PROSPECTS [BY TELEGT! AFH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI. Tuesday. Those who saw Brigadier Bill win at Hawera, were not greatly impressed with his fencing, as he showed a hesitancy at some of the obstacles that was very marked. At Wamganui, however, he put much more dash into his work and went at his fences in a bold style. The All Red gelding stayed on well and finished in a, way that suggests that tho distance will not trouble him at Ellerslie, though whether or not he will prove equal to negotiating the country up there remains to be seen. V. C'olello intends taking Mixed Heather to Auckland, but whether Braeman will also make the trip has not yet been definitely decided. Mixed Heather went a good race in the Hack Steeplechase, but had Radiate stood up the son of Polydamon must have won. Though Pouri did not run into a place in the May Hurdles, he managed to get up into third place in the decision of the Cemtury Hurdle Race, and some good judges expect him to get among the winners shortly. The Spalpeen gelding was going along in a way at the end which suggested that he would show to much better advantage in the near future. Shining Armour promise! to make a good hurdler when he settles down to the jumping game. There is no question as to his pace amd he goes at the obstacles in hold style. The chances are that, with experience the Greyspear gelding will win a hurdle race or two Comical went a better race at, Wanganui than on either day at Hawera and he might yet prove that he is capable of winning a good race or two over the big fences. Glenross made his first appearance after a long absence from the race track on Thursday, when the son of Absurd—Bronze contested the Connolly Handicap. He was with the leaders all the way. but did not show his old-time Brilliancy at tho finish, though he was just in behind the placegetters. As a rule a race makes a wonderful difference in Glenross, and it will inot be surprising if he makes a much better showing in the near future, though he may not regain all his former dash. Nukumai should be an improved horse with his racing at Hawera and Wanganui. The old fellow carries his years well and may prove equal to winning smother race or two later on. FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Acceptances for the following events to be run at the Auckland Racing Club s Winter Meeting close next Friday at 5 p.m. with the secretary., Mr. W. S. Spence: -—Great Northern Hurdles, Great Northern Steeplechase, Cornwall Handicap, Green Lane Steeplechase, Jervnis Handicap, Penrose Hurdles. Hunt Club Hurdles and Members' Handicap. Delightment was struck out of nil engagements at the Auckland Winter Meeting at 4.15 p.m. yesterday.
