PROHIBITION CAMPAIGN

NEW SOUTH! WALES POLL. REFERENDUM TO BE TAKEN. SYDNEY. May 15. The campaign for and against the prohibition of liquor, on which a referendum will be taken in September throughout New South Wales, has commenced. Speakers are addressing meetings in all parts, and the liquor trade has appointed organisers in each of the suburbs at high salaries.

The attitude of the Roman Catholic Church on the question was defined at Forbes by Dr. Hayden, Bishop of Forbes and Wilcannia, who said his Church hoped prohibition would not be carried, as it would be an infringement of the liberty of the citizens. There was no reason for penalising the multitude for the sirs of the few. He considered ihe Government was exceeding its powers in taking the referendum.
