W.C.T.U.
A meeting of the Auckland Women'* Christian Temperance Union was held in the club room of the Y.W.C.A. on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Cook presiding. Among many resolutions passed were the following That power be granted by a magistrate to an employer to deduct from a man's wages the amount of maintenance awarded by the Court to a wife and childron or to illegitimate children; that sly-grog selling would be sooner abolished if it were made illegal for a convicted sly-grog seller to buy any longer in the Dominion, and the society therefore urged that a prohibition order be issued against any person so convicted; that the Government be urged to take immediate stftps to extend the system of separate classes with special teachers for backward children; that there should not be a limit placed on the earning power of widows; that the society considered it would be in the best interests of child welfare in New Zealand if the child-wel-fare branch of the Education Department were separated from the Education Department and created a distinct department under an official directly responsible to the Minister in charge.
