WELFARE OF MAORIS.

ALLOCATING SCHOLARSHIPS. DISCUSSION AT CONFERENCE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS. Tuesday. [An important conference affecting the welfare of Maoris was held at Pak: Paki last evening. Sir A. T. Ngata was present. Discussion took place on Maori scholarships, it baing pointed out that the present method of allocating scholarships to Maori students did not sufficiently distribute them over the whole the Maori population. It was proposed that in l'.eu of the present method, the Education Department be asked to allocate a stated number of Maori scholarships to defined areas. The Maori Land Board areas, it was suggested, would be a suitable basis for distributing these scholarships, so that every tribe would benefit equally. It was also resolved to ask the Government that the scheme of household schools be extended to Maoris, as there are many districts where Maoris are living on their own individual lands in the backblocks, and too far from established schools. A resolution was. also passed conveying the thanks of the Maoris to the New Zealand University for the introduction of the Maori language as a .pass subject for the B.A. and B.Sc. degrees.
