"NORTHUMBERLAND ROCK"
THE UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH, OFFICIAL REPORT BY NAVY. The following official report by the* commodore commanding the New Zealand station, relative to the search for "North- . umberland Rock," 1 north of Gisborue, has been published by the Marine , Department :-r , "The search for the rock, presumed to hays been struck by the Northumberland in lat. 38deg. 41riin. 30secs. S., long. 178deg. 14min. IS., was carried out by the Laburnum, Veronica and Wakakura on February 13, 14 and 15, and no* obstruction was found. An area of three miles long by two mile.3 wide was thoroughly swept to a depth of 10 fathoms by the Wakakura, under the direction ol Commander H. L. Morgan, who considers the area to" ba clpar of all obstructions to a depth of 10 fathoms. During the sweep over the patch of shallower soundings shown on chart Ne. 3345, linw ei soundings were run by both the LaburnuUi and Veronica. The_ results of these soundings are considered. to be a reliable check on the accnracy of the position of the area swept and also on the accuracy of the chatt. The sweeping operations have been completed and the buoys withdrawn."
