The story of the actual capture of Maxfield, the young inmate of the Borstal Institute, who escaped from Invercargill on Thursday, and who was the subject of an exciting man hunt at Balclutha on Friday, is told by Mr. John Woods, of South Dunedin, the owner of the car in which the hunted man made his final attempt to evade capture. Mr. Woods and his wife and family were proceeding to Balclutha, and when approaching the Balclutha Bridge their car was held up by a mob of sheep. The car had proceeded about 80yds. on to the bridge when the occupants noticed a man crouching on the running board and pointing a revolver at the occupants of the front seat. One of the boys in the car seized the revolver and passed it to his father, who stopped the car and held the fugitive captive until the pursuers arrived. Maxfield was removed to the lock-up,for the night and on Saturday morning was taken back to Invercargill by three warders from the Borstal Institute. ;
