The ocean yacht race from Auckland to Mercury Bay was won by Wairiki, with Queenie second. The race started from King's Wharf at 1.™.! p.m on Thursday, Queenie and WairoA'i crossing tho line a little ahead of Heartsease. Xhere was a light breeze from the south-east. Heartsease passed Motairelie smin. ahead of Queenie and Bmin. ahead of Wairiki. The wind through the night was light and patchy and Queenie and Wairiki took the lead. Queenie patted Cape Colville at 6.45 a.m., Wairiki being lOrain. behind her and Heartsease 20min. later. All boats now set their spinnakers with a light breeze down the coast. At 8 a.m. all boats drew level in a calm. An hour later a fresh south-west breeze allowed spinnakers to be carried and Queenio gained a slight advantage inshore. The wind freshened and Heartsease took the lead, passing the Hole in the Wall at 11.30 a.m., n little ahead of the others. All the boat<? then beat to the finishing line at Middle Island. Finishing times were:— Oueeriie. Ih 14m : Heartsease, lh 19m: Wairiki, 1h 27m. Handicaps were: Henrtsease, scr.; Queenie. 20ra; Wairiki, 40m. The race therefore resulted: Wairiki, 1; Queenie, 2: 3. The rcoe for bnnts from Taumiga was won by Vanitie. with Janet second.
