TAX ON LOST PETROL.
Sir, —Unlike other taxes, the petrol tax was imposed for tiie specific purpose of securing funds for the making of highways. writer of the letter in Thursday's Herald apparently overlooks the fact that provision is made in the Act for the exemption from duty of petrol exclusively used for purposes other than as a fuel for a motor vehicle in respect of which an annual license fee is payable. It surely must be obvious to "Tax" that the motor spirit and benzine which were destroyed in the great conflagration were not used in any motor vehicle and should he rebated under the heading "Other Purposes." Personally, I have no douht. that the insurance companies will do the right thing and pay out on the amount of the cost of the goods, which includes the duty, and they, on their pari, will have 'reasonable grounds for getting recovery of the tax from the Government.
