NEW ZEALAND SCENERY.
NOTED AMERICAN'S VISIT. COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERT. A visitor of interest to Aucklanders, Mr. F. P. Clatwortky, who is considered to be America's leading exponent of the . art of colour photography, arrived from the South last Friday after a short tour of the Dominion. Mr. A. H. Messenger, Government publicity officer, accompanied him for the purpose of showing him as much as possible of the unique scenic beauties of the country as the short time at the visitor's disposal! would allow.-Hr. Clatworthy, who is paying his first visit to New Zealand, came mainly at the instigation of the editcr-in-chiiif of the National Geographic Magazine, who requested him to obtain a series of pictures in colour for publication in the journal. Mr. Clatjvorthy, who has made practically a life study of his wor}t F is enthusiastic in his praise of the scenic beauties and attractions of New Zealand. "I am amazed at the wonderful variety you have packed into these two islands and have found it quite impossible to make more than a brief selection in the time at my disposal" he said. ' 'However, I shall certainly return at the earliest' opportunity for an extended tour of. the Dominion." Travelling south from Wellington, Mr. Clatworthy first visited Mount Cook, where he obtained some colour plates of alpine scenery. He next journeyed to QueenatoWft to record some of the beauties of the famous southern lakes, afterwards going over the Mllford track. Returning to Wellington the visitor travelled to Wanganui and New Plymouth, where some studies of Mount Egmont were secured. Eotorua was reached by way of the coast road to Te Kuiti, and while in the thermal district opportunity was taken to obtain a series of colour plates of Maoris. Views of Auckland harbour and city were taken under the ideal conditions prevailing on Saturday, Rangitoto in a setting of pohutukawas also being recorded on the delicate colour plates. Mr. Clatworthy will leave for America by the Aorangi. In addition to the publication of the views ho has obtained Mr. Claiworthy uses the plates for projection on a special screen for lecture purposes and intends to display them throughout California and the other States during the winter season.
