OKAIAWA HOTEL TRANSFER. POLICE OPPOSITION FAILS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Tuesday. At a meeting of the Egmont Licensing Committee at Eltham to-day an application for the permanent transfer of the licence of the Okaiawa Hotel, from Eliza Seymour Rae to Thomas Lambert Smith, was supported by Mr. G. H. Ryan, of Hawera.
Sergeant Henry opposed the application. He said the applicant was being charged in the Hawera Court on Thursday with an alleged breach of the Licensing Act. Mr. Ryan said the police had no right to give any particulars of the charge. The objections must be similar to those made in the case of granting licences. He submitted that there was nothing before the committee to warrant any objection to the application. Applicant would come before the committee in June for a certificate of fitness, and if the position was not satisfactory the licence could be refused.
The chairman, Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., agreed that the position would be reviewed in June, at the annual meeting, when the applicant's conduct for the previous three months would be before ■ the committee. If it was not satisfactory a certificate of fitness could be denied him, and the licence refused. The charges to be heard at the Court were not known to the committee, and as the applicant was not yet on trial they could not say whether he was guilty or not. The proper course was to grant a permanent transfer, which was done.
