NEW RAILWAY LINK.

WAIH l-TANEATUA SECTION.

FIRST THROUGH TRAINS.

SERVICE WITH AUCKLAND. Arrangements are being made for running this week the first through trains over the new link railway between Waihi and Janeatua, in the Bay of Plenty. This important section, recently completed by the Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth Company, establishes continuous railway communication between Auckland and the heart of the fertile Bay of Plenty sheepfarming and dairying region. The line will be finally examined on Friday by the inspecting engineer of the Public Works Department prior to that department taking over at the official opening on March 28. It is not yet certain when the Railway Department will assume control, but from the date of the opening the line*will be fully staffed by railway officials and a time-table is now being prepared. This vveek, however, a special consignment of stock will be collected at stations on the new route for transport north. Fertilisers, probably direct from the ship's side at Auckland, will be sent south.
