LAST MONTH'S TRAFFIC. INCREASE IN LARGE VESSELS. » The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, presiding. During January 711 vessels of 448,329 gross tons and 277,294 net tons, arrived at the port of Auckland, the large merchant shipping showing an increase of six vessels, of 61,149 gross tons and 40,139 net tons, over the corresponding period of last year, according to a return presented by. the harbourmaster, Captain H. H. Sergeant. The local coastal figures were down by 115 vessels. Departures totalled 733 vessels,, of 456,610 gross tons and 282,272 net tons. At Manukau Harbour there was an increase of three in the number of vessels arriving, but the tonnage was down by 3710 gross tons and 1318 net tons. The cash receipts for the period yielded by the traffic on the Waitemata Harbour totalled £33,058. This was a decrease of £1979 on the figures for January, 1927, the decline for the four months of the financial year which have passed being £1383. On the Manukau Harbour the receipts amounted to £565, a decrease of £164 compared with those for January, 1927. y The treasurer advised that the receipts weig only £ll9 short of the estimates for the period. An. application for » reserve to establish headquarters and drill sheds for the Royal Naval Reserve in Fanshawe Street next to the gas works allotment was referred to the board in committee. The usual annual donation of £lO 10s was made to the Shipwreck Relief Society.
