Diomede to Gisborne was marred by a fatal accident which occurred early this morning, when the body of one of the members of the crew, Telegraphist George Oswald Carr, was found lying in the yard at the back of the Albion Hotel. Deceased, with a companion, Thomas Preece. had attended a dance and stayed at the hotel for the night. Carr left his room for a few moments, and Preece fell asleep, not noticing that Carr had not returned. Carr's body was found in the hotel yard by the night porter at 5 a.m. He had apparently fallen from a balcony. Deceased was married, and leaves one child. His wife lives in England. He had 12 years' service with the Navy. With the exception of a ship's guard, the whole complement, of H.M.S. Diomede paraded this afternoon to pay their last respects to their late comrade. The burial took plade at Taruheru cemotery. Father Murphy conducted the service. The Diomede's company paraded in white uniforms, headed by the band of the vessel, and a guard of honour carried their arms reversed. Large numbers of people lined the route.
