INDIAN MUTINY SURVIVOR.

WAVERLEY RESIDENT'S DEATH A survivor of the Indian Mutiny, Mrs. S. Nichols, died at Waverley last week, aged 96. She had resided in New Zealand for 50 years. When the Indian Mutiny broko out Mrs. Nichols was maid to Lady Somerset, the latter's husband being General Sir Henry Somerset, who was in charge of the British forces at Bombay. It was Mrs. Nichols' experience to go through two years of open rebellion and scenes of horror. Afterwards she returned to England and came to New Zealand as one of the band of pioneers who settled in the Halcombe district, near Feilding. She was tlifcn a widow with a young family, and had her full share of the difficulties associated with the early days in New Zealand.
