TOUR OF WARATAHS.
TOTAL GATE-MONEY £61,000. LARGE PROFITS REALISED. (Received January 29, 11.45 p.m.) A. and LONDON, Jan. 23. Tho New South Wales Rugby team today played a pointless drawn game against a London team at Twickenham. It was cold, wet, windy and slippery. There were 12,000 spectators. A dour forward struggle under appalling conditions seemed to infect the players, and the game generally was uninspiring. Owing to tho- Army match London was unable to call* up several international players and the Waratahs were equally unfortunate owing to injuries. Their forwards had decided success in winning three times as many scrums as did London, but the latter were superior in the line-outs and showed better generalship, owing to greater, experience of similar conditions. Most of the Waratahs showed further signs,, of staleness. Nevertheless they lived up to their tradition of being good finishers, and only narrowly failed to snatch victory at the last moment. To the distinction of being one of the most popular Dominion touring sides the New South Wales Rugby, team is likely to return with the more material distinction of creating a record in gate money. The 28 matches are expected to yield a total of £61 ; 000. This includes the record takings in the match against England of £16.00(7: It was the first time the new stand at Twickenham had been filled. .. . ' The other international takings were in the match against Scotland, £8000; against Wales, £5000; against Ireland, £4500. The smallest gate takings were £3OO, against North Scotland. After deducting the expenses of the tour, £12,000, and also the entertainment tax, £12,200, it means the Waratahs will hand over £36,800 to the British authorities, which will be divided in part as follows: —To England, £14,000; to Wales, £9000; to Scotland, £5800; and to Ireland, £4OOO. This compares with the »rofits of £21,000 on the tour of the All Blacks. The Waratahs will take back £I6OO in profit from the French tour, and £6OO guaranteed in Vancouver.
