INCREASE IN SYDNEY. SCARCITY OF LEATHERBecause of increases in the price jetf leather, boot and Bhoe repairs are to cost more in Sydney. The advance "will be" at least 6d a pair on men's and women's shoes, with proportionate advances oa other jobs, . In making the announcement last nignt» Mr. EL T. Warren, secretary of the Isew South Wales Bootmakers and Association, said that at a meeting of the association it was pointed out that the price of leather had been_ steadily on the increase for weeks, and indications were that further increases would take place. The tanners were beginning to feel very acutely the scarcity of hides, and, as » natural consequence, the finished as used by the rep&ivers, was getting more scarce, and at the same time mora costly. • « The banners did not hold out any hope of the present prices remaining for long* said Mr. Warren. There was at present a shortage of hides aty the world over, and competition for whatever supplies of hides were offering was so keen oa the part of foreign buyers that the local tanner has to pay.high prices to obtain any supply at all. Some repairers st the present were experiencing difficulty in obtaining supplies, a position which is sure to continue. Further increases ffl the price of hides might moan farther increases in the cost of repairs*
