NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE.

A FESTIVE GATHERING. The new year was ushered in with much merriment and good cheer on New Year's Eve. At tha invitation of Mr. G. 13. Bassant, manager of the Grand Hotel, and Mr. R. 0. Chesney," manager of the Hotel Cargen, a happy gathering assembled at the Masonic Hall. A spirit of carnival and hearty good fellowship marked the occasion, and the festivity reached its height at twelve o'clock, when the hall was thrown into darkness and a fanfare of trumpets announced the hour, which was struck from an illuminated clo;k, suddenly revealed from obscurity. In accompaniment to a merry din, the strains oi Auld Lang Syne weru heard and the lights went up. on a g<iy company, in which the gala note was .accentuated by the bright paper caps, coloured fans and other quaint which had been distributed during the evening. The hall was artistically decorated in an effective colour scheme of eyejjunen and mauve. Boughs of featljery jjreenery lined the walls and across the entrance a box hedge, flanked "by tall pedestals, formed a huge screen. Overbold lines of wistaria, were strung in cyclamen tii#s, and de'jp irose-coloured shades gavo charming lighting effects.
