TOUR OF WARATAHS. DEFEAT OF GLOUCESTER. (Received January 2, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Jan. 1. The New South Wales Rugby team yesterday defeated Gloucester by 13 points to 4. In the first half Gloucester did most of the attacking, but before the interval the visitors scored a try which was converted. In the second half the Waratahs held the upper hand, although without A. Tancred, who retired through an injury. The bad handling of the home team was responsible for many missed chances, but they scored a dropped goal practically on time. The Waratahs showed more finish than their opponents. A feature of their game was the fine backing up, and the co-operation among the forwards in rushes. A. Tancred has dislocated his shoulder and. will be unable to play for the remainder of the tour. The injury was not due to the state of the ground. WORLD SCULLING TITLE. Mr. George Matterson, Major Goodsell's trainer, says the sculler s plkn to live in Vancouver may prevent him from defending the world title in Australia if he regains it from Barry on the Thames, The offer of Mr. Cook, his Sydney backer, has been sent to Gcodsell, who is in the south. MELBOURNE, Jan. 1. •In tho Sheffield Shield cricket match, Victoria against South Australia, Victoria carried their first innings total to 637 (Ponsford 336, Scaife 33, Blackie, not out, 28). Wall took three wickets for 83 runs and Griinmett five for 170. South Australia*, in their first innings, lost three wickets for 135 (Schneider 38, Harris, not. out, 60). The weather was fine and the wi&ket good. Ponsford batted freely for 338 minutes. He hit 33 fours and mad? the highest individual score in a match between Victoria and South Australia. He has now completed an aggregate of more than 1000 runs for three successive matches, and an aggregate of 1146 in one season's, Sheffield Shield games. South Australia opened carefully, and Harris was Scoring freely when failing light ended play for the day.
