CHESS TOURNAMENT.

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRESS IN NiNTH ROUND. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. 0 CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Further progress was made to-day in the tournament for the chessi championship of New Zealand. Following are the results, the first game mentioned, being in the eighth round and the others in the ninth round:— McDermid v. Friberg (Queen's pawn game).—Friberg had a little better of the position, being a pawn up toward the end of the game. He threatened to make further headway when McDermid sacrificed a bishop for two pawns, and drew by perpetual check at the 50th move. Friberg v. Neville (Petroff defence). — The game did net proceed on orthodox lines. Friberg, playing rather cautiously, obtained a difficult game, of which Neville took full advantage a- d Friberg resigned on the 45th move. Summers v. Severne (irregular).—Summers obtained an open king's knight's file and is strongly attacking. There is a lot of play in the game, which was adjourned. Fail-burn v. Joyce (Queen's pawn game).—Joyce played the Dutch defence and Fairburn worked up an attack. Joyce did not defend carefully with the result that Fairburn's attack on the king's side became too strong and Joyce resigned. McDermid v. Fisher (Queen's gambit declined). —Fisher obtained a cramped defence and to relieve the position, went for several exchanges. The game is adjourned, McDermid having a pawn up.^ Kelling v. Davies (French defence).— Careful opening tactics in which Kelling castled on the king side and Davies on the queen side. At the adjournment both were making a strong attack.
