GERMAN SHIPPING.
RECOVERY SINCE WAR.
MANY NEW SHIPS BUILT.
A. and N.Z. BERLIN, Dec. 29." Figures have been issued showing the amazing recovery since the war of the German mercantile marine. The tonnage before the war was 5,460,000. In 1921 it was only 717,000, and it is now 3,500,000. After the war the Nord-Deutscher-Lloyd Line issued a statement, in which it said it had been robbed of e very oceangoing steamer, and was back to the position it occupied in 1857. Tha company owns now 840,000 tons of shipping, and the Hambarg-Amerika Line owns 1,203,000. German competition with British • shipping is facilitated because all their ships are new, and tho British ships are mostly over 10 years old. A further impetus will be given to German shipping when tho sequestrated ships now held by the United States are released, or an indemnity paid for them. The German valuation of these ships is £16,000,000, and the American valuation £6,750,000.
