THE PETROL TAX AND ROADS.

Sir —The tax of 4d a gallon on motor spirit is a very heavy one, but motorists, as a rule, will not mind that if the money is judiciously spent; not frittered away, but spent to make the roads decent for motorists. It is up to the motorists to fonn a union and approach the Government, and ask to have all roads standardised, right through both islands. Let tha Government engineers agree as to the best class of road for mainly motor traffic, give all local bodies instructions that their roads are to be made to this standard, and, if they will not do it, then, abolish all local bodies that do road making, and let the Government engineers do it. A* 4d per, gallon duty, the motorists p_ay the piper, and they have a perfect right o call the tune. PEOGUES3.
