MR. AMERY IN SOUTH.

ARRIVAL AT DUNEDIN. CO-OPERATION IN EMPIRE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Thursday. The Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr. L. S. Amery, and party, arrived in Dunodin this evening after a pleasant railway journey from Christchurch in beautiful weather. At the civic reception, the speech of welcome was given by the Mayor, Mr. B. Taverner, who spoke of' the progress of the Dominion and of the necessity for its people to settle its lands and increase its production. Mr. James Begg, representing farming interests, dealt with Empire trade and pastoral and agricultural matter* Mr. Amery, in his reply, touched on the question of co-operation, not only between New Zealand and Britain, but between every component part of the Empire, so that the full strength of the Empire might be developed. He said • let every portion of the EmpiVe harness the stimulating power of its markets, and in a comparatively short period the terrible monetary losses of the war would bo made good. He expressed pleasure that this Dominion had shown her solidarity with Britain in the common problem of maintaining the freedom of the seas. He touched on migration, fiscal preferences, and on the operations of the Marketing Board.

To-morrow the party proceeds to Southland to view farm lands and afterwards motors to Otago Central to see the effects of irrigation on fruit and agricultural lahds. Subsequently Mr. Amery and party will visit the West Coast and Nelson, returning to Wellington on December 14. -

STOP AT ASHBTJRTON. THE IMMIGRATION QUESTION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION,] ASHBURTON. Thursday. A stop of 25 minutes was made at Ashburton by Mr. L. S. Amery, Secretary of State for the Dominions, on his journey south. He was officially welcomed by the Mayor and tho county chairman. Mr. Amery suggested that Ashburton County should nominate suitable young men as immigrants from Ashburton in Devonshire. He expressed regret that the shield presented to the borough by Major Harvey, M P., as a token of the Imperial connection between the two Ashburtons, had not arrived in time for official, presentation. Mr. Amery and party spent an hour in Timaru where Mr. Amery received a civic welcome pnd later delivered an address to the senior pupils of the high schools. lie expressed regret that he was unable to spend more time in Timaru.
