DOUBLE LINE EXTENDED.
OPERATION TO PAPATOETOE. AUTOMATIC SIGNALLING. The double railway line will be in operation between Auckland and Papatoetoe from Monday next, Otahuhu now being the terminus of the double section. At the same time the system of signalling automatically by three coloured lights will be extended from Papatoetoe to Drury, and on the following Monday it will probably be further extended to Mercer.
The advantage of the system is that it makes possible reduction of staff at some stations, and eliminates staff entirely from others It supersedes the tablat system and facilitates the regular movement of trains on single lines by dividing the line between signal cabins and unattended crossing stations into sections, and, at the same time, automatically maintaining a proper space interval between following trains This is accomplished by controlling the signal lights by track circuits in advance, so that when a train enters a section the signal is automatically held at the "stop" position until the" train is under the protection of the signal next in advance.
