IMPROVING THE ROADS. WORK ON BUCKLAND CREEK. [ITY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J I'UKEKOHE, Tuesday The i J ukekohe Borough Council met Inst evening, the Mayor, Mr. John Routly, presiding. It was decided to telegraph to Mr. E. L). McLennan, M.l'., asking him to endeavour to have the formalities for the raising of the 10 per cent, addition on the council's loading loan of £20,000 completed m tune to allow an early start in the New Year with hituminising the road toward i'tnii and the road toward Ma uk u. An oiler from the Hunter Estate to donate necessary land to give a 33ft. width for a drive and footway along the Domain from Harris Street to John Street was referred to the borough solicitors for advice, as to whether the council was entitled to use Domain property for the provision of a drive. A deputation from the Franklin Racing Club offered to pay the cost of purchasing an area, additional to that contemplated by the council, to so cut back the corner opposite the main entrance to the racecourse that full turning room for traffic would be provided on race days. The deputation was asked to formally submit the proposal in writing. The council resolved to take steps to ha\ f e .the Buckland Creek from Manukau Koad to the Franklin Racing Club's property, straightened, deepened and widened to drain the council's pipes under Manukau Road, clear of dead water, the council to pay half the cost, and the propertyowners half. However for the portion from the northern end of Mr. Dalton's now ditch to the northern boundary of Mr. Dalton's property, the whole cost is to lie borne by the council. It was agreed to first obtain the opinion of the borough solicitors as to whether the council could contribute toward this work without constituting the creek a public drain. The foreman was authorised to let the cleaning of the i'aerata Creek by contract. The deputy-mayor, Mr. G. T. Farv'in, was appointed to represent the council on the committee for the Franklin court at the Auckland Winter Show. It was agreed to forward a remit to the forthcoming Municipal Conference, to bo held at Nelson on March 14, that municipal bodies pool their insurance risks with a view to obtaining cheaper insurance rates. An indication ol tho procedure to bo followed by a borough council in preparing its town-piitmiifig scheme under the Town Planning Act was given by the Director of Town Planning, Mr. R. B. Hammond, to members of tho Pukekohe Borough Council last week. A report on the matter was submitted to the council last evening by tho town clerk, Mr. J. F. Denne. Notice'of motion to remove the restriction of 20 minutes for the parking of cars in tho main street was given by Mr. H. J. Wily.
