OBITUARY.
MR. GWALTER PALAIRET. .An old resident ot Napior, Mr. Gwaiter Palairet, died last week at the ago of 90 years. Ho arrived in New Zealand in 1868 in (lie sailing ship Maori, starting life on the station of the late Mr.- Brittain, in Canterbury. He eventually joined the Government service in Christcnurch, working his way up to the position of Deputy-Commissioner of Stamps and Joint Stock Companies. He was closely connected with the Christchurch Musical Society, acting in the capacity of conductor, also as organist of St. Michael's and other churches. After retiring from the Government service Mr. Palairet moved with his family to Gisborne, where he interested himself largely in musical matters. His next move was to Napier, where he made his final homo. He is survived by his widow and a family of six, Mr J. G. Palairet, of Auckland, Mr. Charles Palairet of India, Mr. \ Fred. Palairet, of Gisborne, Mr. Arthur Palairet, of Rangiora, Mrs. W. Branson, of Napier, and Mrs. Mainland Foster, of Gisborne. MRS. S. E BROOKFIELD. The death of Mrs. Sarah Edith Brookfield, aged 72, wife of Mr. F. W. Brookfield, occurred in Auckland on Monday. Mrs. Brookfield was a daughter of tlac late Rev. A. E. Purchas, of Onehunga. '
