THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
POSITION OF AN OFFICER. -The recent disagreement in the ranks of the Enginedrivers, Firemen and Cleaners' Association of the New Zealand TTailways .regarding the presidency of Mr. R. Carroll, pf Auckland, was further discussed at a meeting of members iu the Trades Hall yesterday afternoon. There were about 200 present. Mr. F. Cunnold, president of the Auckland branch, presided. Messrs. J. F. Lewin, president, and Mr. W. McArley, general secreta-ry of tli'e association, addressed the meeting, explaining why Mr. Carrol] has been disjilaced. This action, they stated, had been effected through rule 77, which stated that anyone who had been removed from the foot-plate owing to failing vision could not hold office in the association. Mr. Carroll, in reply, pointed out that, 'according to rule 53, the executive council Was the body to interpret the rules, and Tc l!ad decided to retain him as president, lie was supported by Mr. A. J. Denz, of Frankton. No resolution was passed. The Auckland Assocation recently forwarded a remit to the executive council asking that' rule 77 should be deleted.
