A. nnd N.Z. * MELBOURNE, Nov. 1. Melbourne Cup Day came in with a dull sky. Rain fell overnight and also during the early stages of the morning. Though the sky remained overcast the weather was fine when racing commenced. There was an enormous attendance, includ irig the Governor-General. Lord Stone haven. There was an exciting race for the Melbourne Cup. Silvius looked likp a winner at the distance. Trivalve, who w;\s sixth at the mile post, finished best and scored brilliantly. Son o' Mine finished with a phenomenal run, after being last at the home turn. Merry Mint showed up for a long way, but Pilliewinkie was never dangerous. The winner and the rider (R. Lewis) were accorded a remarkable ovation, which lasted for several minutes. Lewis had his fourth victory in the race. It was' the fourth win for the trainer, Mr. Scobie Trivalve is the first horse to win a Derby and Cup since Patrobas won both in 1915. After the race, Lewis said ho had a good ride. His horse was never further back than tenth, and followed Reed on Sil vius. Ho considered Trivalve won because he had two strains of Musket against Silvius' one. Trivalve was bred by his owner, Mr. E. E. *t). Clarke, who is at present on a fishing excursion in New Zealand. Lewis is 49 years old, and Mr Scobie is 67. They were both congratulated by the Governor-General after the race. Affirm took charge soon after the start, and led past the stand from Sacedon, Rawhetu. Silvius, Trivalvc, Merry Mint arid Star d'Or, with Valaisian, who began badly, last. On leaving the straight Affirm was still in command, and nine furlongs from home was a length in front, followed by Rawhetu, then by Piastoon, Sacedon. Merry Mint, Silvius, Star d'Or, and Pilliewinkie, with Son o' mine now last.

Star d'Or moved up fast near the mile and six furlongs post, and was second to Affirm. Others prominent were Silvius, Rawhetu, Trivalve, Sacedon and Murillo, while Bicolour was moving up and Son o' Mine was still last. Affirm led at the turn, apd was first into the straight, lead ing Silvius, Bicolour, Trivalve and Textile in that order.

Silvias was in front at the distance, but Tnvalve finished best, and won by a length. Son of .Mine, who finished with a remarkable run, was a length and aquarter away, third. Textile was fourth, then came Bicolour, Devonshire, Murillo, Affirm, Star d'Or, Tangible, Beedos, Eridanus, Imitator and Pilliewinkie, with Thracian last. Time, 3m '24s.

The fractional times were:—First four furlongs, succeeding four, 52£s; the concluding six, linin. 16,jSee. ; and the last mile, lmin. 42£ sec. Ashley Reed, the rider of Silvius, said that he thought Silvius was a certainty at the turn, but the horse faded in the run home.

After being fourth in the early stages of the Hurdle Race, Deauville lead at the last hurdle and won nicely. Deauville has now won the last three races. The time was a race record. Fujisan scored a brilliant victory in the High-weight. He won the same race last year. His rider, J. Pike, has steered the winner in three successive years. Maid of Nook finished briliantiy and scored a narrow win in the Nursery Handicap. She! cost 80gns. as a yearling and has the record of two wins and a second in four starts up to the present she has won £ISOO in stakes.

Clan .Robert, after being fifth in the early stages, led into the straight in the Steeplechase and scored a popular victory. He was ridden by. the veteran, E. Moon, and was trained by J. Scobie. Navargo fell and was fatally injured. Beau Hania was a long way back in the opening stages of the Yan Yean Stakes, but finished with a great burst and won brilliantly, ridden by Frank Dempsey.
