LATE MR. H. M. SMEETON.
TRIBUTES TO CHURCH WORK.'
Touching tributes to the memory of Mr. H. M. Smeeton were paid at a service at the Baptist Tabernacle yesterday. The coffin was piled high with a mass of beautiful wreaths, and the service was largely attended. "Mr.' Smeeton was in many ways anv extraordinary man," said the Rev. J. W. Kemp, in reference to the deceased's many-sided activities, particularly in the church, in which he had held various offices for 35 years. Ho had left the impress of thoroughness 011 everything to which he devoted his energies, and he was a man of transparent sincerity. Reference to Mr. Smeeton's work in. securing the college site "for the training of ministers was made by the Rev. J. -J. North, who described the project as the dream of Mr. Smeeton's life. Only two tfaeks ago Mr Smeeton had journeyed to Wellington at no inconsiderable lisk i?i order to take part iri deliberations connected with tKe scheme, and ho had then been elected chairman of the college board The Dead March was played by Air.. Arthur Wilson at the close of the service. The funeral later took place at the Wai- ;j karaka Cemetery, Mr Kemp, in association with other church leaders, conducting the service at the graveside. Tna, pall-bearers were Messrs W Smeeton, J. Smeeton, W E Bush, F Brookbanks, W R. Ellingham and R. S Abel.
