MR. CHARLES .NIGHTINGALE.

(.BIT TELEGBAPH. —OWN. CORR£SPO2iI>E>" £.j, HOKITIKA, Tuesday. I'he death took place tins afternoon of Charles James Nightingale, one of the proprietors of the Hokitika Guardian. Tlie deceased, who was 64 years of age, had . been identified with the West Coast since the time of the Jackson Bay settlement, where he went with his father. He was a member of the Harbour Board and the Licensing Committee and a past master of the Freemason's Lodge. He leaves a * widow and a family of seven children. •

MRS. RICHARD COSSILL. [By TELEC-RAPH. —OWN COR RESPONDENT. J WHANGAREI. Tuesday. Une oi the early settlers in the northern district, Mrs. Richard CossiU, died at her residence in Robert Street to-day. The deceased lady, \tho was 83 years of age, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wells, well-known inhabitants of. the Far North, where she spent her girlhood. She was married in 1864 at Mangonui to Captain Richard Cossill, who abandoned the sea and pioneered in various parts of the peninsula. Mr. and Mrs. CossiU had a farm in Northern Wairoa, arid later conducted the Tangiteroria Hotel, and again fanned at Tangihua and at Mauna, before they came to live in Whangarei over 20 years ago. Mrs. Cossill had good health until about five weeks ago, when she was. stricken with a painful illness. The deceased is survived by her husband. five sons, three daughters, 39 grandchildren, and 28 great-grand-children. The sons are Messrs. Charles (Tangihua), William (Whangarei), Louis Daniel (Pukehuia), Henry (Sydney), find Andrew. The daughters are Mrs. Middleton (Waihi). Mrs. "Johnson and Mrs. TSoag (Auckland).
