WOMEN AS GOLFERS.

DESIRE FOR OWN LINKS. A MELBOURNE MOVEMENT. [from our own correspondent. ] ' SYDNEY. Oct. 20 Women golfers in Melbourne want their own links —a course on which they will be at liberty to play every dav of the week. At present the women find that their opportunities are insufficient. They com plain of the limitations placed by male members of the golf clubs on the use of the links by the ladies The trouble seems to be that, as women golfers are an innovation, the rules of the clubr. do not make any special provision for them. The rules indeed are entirely in favour of the men Women cannot become more than associate members—full membership is the privilege of the males. And 011 Saturdays and holidays when the women would tike to join in the games thev find that they are debarred. They have, therefore, to fit in their golf prac tice to "off" days. The members of the Victorian Ladies Golf Union have now got the idea of entab lishing a club of their own. It will be entirely controlled by women, who will have a course of their own on which they will be able to play at any time. An option has been obtained over an area of land which is regarded by experts as ideal for links. But finance is the big ques lion. It is estimated that £25.000 will be needed. The move is a bold one, and should certainly concentrate attention on the women's grievances.
