COMMENT ON EVENTS. INTERESTING FIRST RACE. RED FUCHSIA'S EASY WIN. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. 3 MASTERTON, Saturday. The Masterton Racing Club's Bpring Meeting was held to-day in brilliant woather. Ihe newly-appointed stipendiary steward, Mr B W. Sandilanda. officiated for the first time. In tho Highweight Handicap Red Fuchsia and Brigadier Bili were the beet backed, in one of the most splendid events seen for a long time. Hymgreat and Phantasy were first out, but were steadied, and Red Fuchsia was allowed to take charge from Gordon Swift. Brigadier Bill. Phantasy and Hymj great. Nothing appeared anxious to go up | to Red Fuchsia, who turned for home four | or five lengths clear, winning easily by five j lengths. At the last moment there was a j stern battle for second money, Brigadier Bill just boating Gordon Swift by a nose, with Sir Moment right up fourth. Phantasy was nest. All that can he said in the way of comment in this event is that the form can be ignored absolutely. For tho Maiden Stakes Australia wound up favourite, with Flying Binge and Card Trick nearly as well backed. Cornhill was left at the post and Card Trick led out from Flying Binge and Australis, with Starchion and Administration :aext. In that order they raced to the turn. A furlong from home Australis went up to Card Trick and beat him home by two length?. Starchion was a. length away third, and then came Thurville. Spear Miss, Agreeable. Full Mark, Administration and Flying Binge. The Flying Handicap saw Polyphemus favourite when betting ceased, with a fair amount of support for Inner Harbour. Polyphemus was caught unprepared, while Lady Ideal and Lausanne were also slow away. Mireusonta began best from Willow Wai and Inner Harbour and. racing round i to the turn. Mireusonta led Sarchee and Willow Wai. with Lady Ideal, Lausanne and Polyphemus, racing in that order. Sarchee had the measure of Mirensonta a furlong from home, with Lausanne going on well on the outside. Sarchee won by ft length and a-half from Lausanne, who beat Mireusonta by two lengths. Lady Id«3al. Polyphemus and Inner Harbour followed at intervals. Sarchee was lucky that Polyphemus, Lausanne and Lady Ideal were all bndly placed at the start. In the Lawn Handicap Ring Boy was always favourite, with Princ© Paladin best backed of the others. Vigilance and Kindle showed out first from Glengassy. Ring Boy nnd Lady Killer. Prince Paladin was next. So they raced right round to the turn, where Vigilance had drawn clear of Kindle, Over tho last furlong Lady Killer, under the whip, came fast to beat Vigilance by a length. Ring Boy was three-quarters of a length away third, and Kindle right up fourth. Then at intervals, came Grand National, Hillock and Prince Paladin. Lady Killer came with a great run at the end and Vigilance stayed on well, after leading nearly all the way, Ring Boy and Kindle both ran a decent race. The Masterton Cup saw Rowley favourite, with fair support for Waicullua and Tresham. Tresham was the first out. to make the pace from Waicullus and Pigeon, with Rowley in behind the two. Tresham opened up a break temporarily, six furlongs from home, but the others were on his heels again at the and of a iurlong.

At the turn, where Wild Pigeon had ranged up with Tresh&m and Waicullua, the first-named ran wide, and Rowley came through. Rowley, hard ridden, overhauled Waicullua and beat him home by a length. Ardfinnan was throe lengths away third, with Wild Pigeon fourth and Tresham last. Rowley ie very well and ran a great race io beat Waicullua. who just failed to see out the journey. Treaham was well beaten at tho end. In the Lansdowne Handicap Imitation wag favourite, with plenty of support for Maui. Twink headed the others. Imitation, Mandar : ne, Raukura and Maui began beßt from Pantler, and Mandarine went on with Raukura. to lead across the top from Imitation, Maui and Rotowhero, with Pantler next. Mandarine settled Raukura at the turn and then Imitation. Rotowhero joined in finally. Pantler came with the last run to beat Imitation by half a length, with Mandarine a head away third. Rotowhero was right up fourth, then came Maui. Veronese and Kales Pantler finished vers, fast and won in good style. Mandarine and Imitation both ran decent races. Mandarine is due at any time. * The Grandstand Handicap saw Vesperus, Beaumont and Eilmoyler the only ones backed to any extent. Kilmoyler, Brigadier Bill, Beaumont and Riverna were the first out, and when they had settled down Brigadier Bill had charge from Kilmoyler, Beaumont, Cosmetic and Thurnbell. Kilmoyler and Cosmetic lost their positions racing for the turn, where Brigadier Bill had a good lead from Beaumont, with Kilmoyler showing up again. Beaumont wore down Brigadier Bill in the run in and won by two lengths. Vesperus was three lengths tw&y third, with Kilmoyler. Thurnbell and Cosmetic nest. Beaumont is a great horse for this type of race and really he won with ease from Brigadier Bill, who was making his second appearance. Vesperus yet requires a race or two. POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB. [bt telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. With a large number of horses engaged at the Banks Peninsula meeting, the trackwork at Riccarton on Saturday was not so exciting as usual, bilt Bome useful gallops were registered by the North Island contingent. Te Monanui finished just in front of Star Stranger at the end of a mile and aqu&rter. but it looked as if the latter could have done better. Both these horses look well, but popular opinion favours Star Stranger. The pair were accempanied by David Garriok, who did quite well to finish not far behind his doughty rivals. T. Lloyd gave Piuthair and Clarinda good work, and they got through their tasks very attractively. Piuthair is growing in favour for the New Zealand Cup. Beacon Light went well in a mile gallop with Tiega, the pair maintaining a sound pace all the way. Battlement took part in a mile and aquarter spin, but his form waa very disappointing. Apparently he was not in a galloping mood Shirley stepped out freely in a five-fur-long sprint and she looks like racing well. W. G. Hobbs has the two-year-old filly Merivale, by Paladin, from Bon&ria, moving along well in her work. She will not be racing at Riccarton next month, bat she may make her appearance at the South Canterbury meeting early in December;.
