SHAMES JOCKEY CLUB. MEET! Nil AT ELLERSLIE. MOSAIC WINS THE CUP. SPRINT EVENT TO NANCY LEE. Fine weather prevailed for the opening oi the Thames Jockey Club's Annual Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday and there was ar attendance estimated at 12.000. The / course was in splendid order and most of the races were run in good time. There was a good number of Thames residents present. The management of {.he meeting ■was in the hands of Mr. YV. S. Spence and everything passed off most pleasantly. The Goldfields Cup was won by Mosaic ■who took charge five furlongs from homt and beat the opposition pointless at the finish. Mosaic's stable mate, Nancy Lee, completed a stable double by winning the Flying Handicap. It is interesting to recall that the horses named were successful in the same events last year. Mosaic is owned by Mr. R. Porter, who races Kancy Lee in partnership with Mr. R, W: Todd The pair are trained at Te Aroha by A. E. Cox, who also provided another winner in Rarakau. Form worked out well at the meeting and, though Judge's Bon and Avon Court were the only actual favourites to score all the winners were well supported ant there were no surprises. It is a coincidence that the two successful favourites should both hail from F. Gilchrist's stable at Ellerslie. - The Judicial Committee was called together on a couple of occasions to con eider incidents in connection with the racing. An inquiry was held into the run ning of Golden Wedding in the first division of the Borough Handicap. The explanation tendered was accepted, and no action was taken. There was also an inquiry into the interference met with b_\ Bold Front in the Puriri'tlandicap. It was attributed to Restaurant having a bad mouth and coming in on Piet, forcing the latter on to Levenside, who was pushed on to Bold Front. The incident was considered to be accidental, and no action was taken. The totalisator handled £53,097, compared with £17,480 on the corresponding day last year, when the meeting was held at Thames. This represents an increase of £36,617, The results were:— THAMES HANDICAP HURDLES. Of £200; second £35, third £ls; 2 miles. •f—MANGANI, A, H. Seven started in the Thames Handicap Hurdies and Glenotus wound a shade better fancied than Kamehameha, with the others all fairly supported. Rahepoto took charge from the start, and made play early from Mangani and Kendal. The field bunched running into the back stretch, but at the hurdle by the sis furlong post Rahepotc and Mangani drew out a few lengths to lead through the cutting clear of Kamehameha, who was- several lengths ahead of Kendal, So they raced to the straight, where Rahepoto was beaten and Kamehameha moved up. Kamehameha was in front at- the last fence, where Mangani blundered Blightly ace Kendal fell. In the run-in Mangani cam« again to beat Kamehameha by a neck, with Glenotus running on strongly about half a length away in third position. Te Tahi was fourth, followed by Rahepoto. J. Mcßae, rider of Kendal, had one of his lees bruised. There were thirty-three runners for the Borough Handicap, and the event was run in two divisions dividends being paid only on the winner of each heat Those to receive most support were Judge's Box, £sh Tray and the Hone Heke—King Peg bracket. An uneven start in the first division saw Noia Night, The Lover and Bannock badly left, while Bombarder and Royal received the best of it. Bombarder was the early pacemaker and he showed the way i,- lo (lie straight to Flyine Tresses, Tidal, Orchus, Rarakau and Golden Wedding, who went out extremely wide round the bend. Rarakau came through at the distance, lo win comfortably by a length and a-half from Day, who finished fairly well on >he inside. Bombarder was a length away, third, and Ash Tray fourth, with Orahus, Flving Tresses and Brampton nest to cross the line. Bombarder shaped well for a green cne. and Tidal displayed some pace in the middle stages. The start of the second division was also very straggling, Josie Melville being -firet out, while King Peg, Miss Myrtle and Hone Heke lost many lengths. Before the field had gone far Judge's Bex was closely attending Josie Melville, and the pair turned for home a couple of lengths clear of Creation, Subdivision, Fiery Lad, and Good Boy. Once they straightened up Judge"s Box drew away to win with ease by two lengths from Subdivision, who cut Creation out of second by a nose. Josie Melville was fourth, followed by Winsome Boy, Good Boy and Micrometer. Subdivision did not go out too well, otherwise he may have given more trouble. Creation lost second place by running about at the finish. King Peg had his chance> effectually nettled at the start. Nancy Lee Wins. The Flying Handicap was a good betting race, with High Finance a slightly better favourite than Nancy Lee, and strong support also for Flying Julie?. Thej left to a fair start, High Finance and Nancy Lee going out fast to lead into the straight a few lengths clear of Antrim Boy, who was just clear of Flying Juliet and Sir Archie. Nancy Lee came away at the distance and won decisively by a length and a-half from High Finance, who just lasted long enough to beat Antrim Boy by a neck. Flying Juilet was right up fourth, and then came Sir Archie, Nastori and Automne. Antrim Boy ran a surprisingly good race, while Flying Juliet finished strongly and shoul l soon do better. Nastori began quickly but soon drifted and was never dangerous. All started in the Nurnery Handicap, and the Avon Court-Nankin Blue bracket was most in demand, with Volimond a good second choice. Volimond, Avon Court and The Begum were QUickrs* to begin, while Mon Star was badly left and Red Lioa also began slowiy. Volim< id Av n Court and The Begum raced practically on terms t-o the straight, several length*: clear of Look Out and Coruscate. In a good finish Avon Court won by a neck fmir Volimond, with Rod Lion two lengths away, third. Valour was fourth, and then followed Nankin Blue and Coruscate. Red Lion finished well after being unlucky at the start. Avon Court scored her third successive victory and i 3 a solid filly who is improving with each race. Volimond made an improve showing. Mosaic's Pine Victory. The Goldfields Cup attracted eleven runners. There was good wagering on the event, Nippy having a slight call over Mosaic in the betting, with Papatu a solid third fancy. Several horses gave trouble at the barrier, but a decent start was eventually effected. Day Guard and Gala Day going out. to make the pace from Nippy, Mosaic and Master Doon. 'With five furlongs covered Mosaic ran to the front to lead into the straight; a couple of lengths in front of Day Guard, who was follewed by Nippy, Delightment and Cola Day. Nothing had a chance with Mosaic in tho run home, and he went on to win easily by three lengths from Day Guard Master Doon finished fairly and was a length and a-half away, third, with Nippy fourth. Then came Gala Day, Delightment. Papatu and Royal Mint. Nippy had every chance but does not appear to race as well at Ellevslie as elsewhere. Day Guard" rrn a fi»< race and should be much harde to beat at a mile, Papatu was never dangerous, and as usual Royal Mint was runnir" on at the finish. For the Thames Valuv Handicap In the Shade was a good favouriV over Branson, with strong support also for several nf the others. From a good start Serang md Le Choucas werf fi*st out, followed by Branson and In the Shade Serang carried on the running to the turn, where he was iloseJy followed by In the Shade, Le Choucas, Branson and Nufcleus. In the Shade went up to Serang at the distance, and Branson also challenged. Under pressure Branson finished resolutely and secured the verdict by a short necU from In the Shade, who beat, Serang by a iengfh Le Choucas, whose rider claimed a slb. apprentice allowance. was right up fourth in front of King Smock. Arcberi'- ard Killute This was Branson's third successive victory and his first in open company. He recorded a nice performance. In the Shade made a gallant effort and only failed in the last little bit. Serang revealed a glimpse of his old form and will on'v have to improve Blightly to win «ocn. Levenside was made a slightly better favourite than Bold Front for the Puriri Handicap, while there was also good backing for Piet. Respirator and Star Comet were nuickly prominent, soon to give way to Whaka King, Piet and Restaurant, Run-

ning across the top Respirator ran up second and the order into the straight was "Whaka King, Respirator, Piet, Wyoming and Frowning J3eauty, with Bold Front coining faat, Respirator took charge at the distance and stayed to wiv by a neck from Piet. Bold Front was two lengths away, third,, and Levenside fourtL Then followed Frowising Beauty, Daddy's Girl and Kotnak. Bold Front and Levenside were both unlucky in meeting with interference. Bold Front getting knocked back from fifth to nearly last near the fivo furlong post. Piet was always prominent ard he should score soon. There was a good pool on the Hauraki Plains Handicap, Bailymoy II carrying nearly a-quarter of the investments while Mint Leaf and Quinoomi were also freely eupported. Bailymoy 11. hopped out smartly, but had not gone far before being joined by Sleepy 00l Running into the straight Bailymoy It. and Sleepy -Sol were several lengths clear of their nearest attendant, Phaola, who was followed by Mint Leaf and Quincoma. Sleepy Sol battled on gamely at the finish to secure the verdict by a neck from Bailymoy 11., Phaola being a length and a-half away, third. Sleepy Sol and Bailymoy 11. had the lace to themselves and gave nothing else a chance. Phaola made a fair showing, while Quincoma made up a lot of ground in the last couplo of furlongs. CONCLUDING DAY'S EVENTS. GOOD ACCEPTANCES. The Thames Jockey Club's Meeting will be concluded to-day, and with a good list of acceptances for the eight events which form the programme, and with a good promise of weather conditions in full keeping with the season, racegoers may be expected to again assemble in strong force at Ellerslie in order to assist at the gathering. The following is a list of the acceptances for the various races:—

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. A poor class field of hurdlers will contest the Totara Handicap Hurdles. Some of those engaged have had no publio experience and it may prove a difficult race for backers, who may show a preference for Temperature, Queen Emerald and Scot Free. The County Handicap has attracted a useful field of hacks. Levenside and Bold Fronf were unlucky on the opening day and will probably dispute favouritism, while Modest Boy should also claim attention. A small field will contest the President's Handicap. Form points to Nancy Lee, High Finance and Oration, and they should, all be well backed. Nancy Lee won well on Saturday and, despite a rise of ilib., will probably start favourite. Another small field is carded for the Thames Steeplechase. In spite of his dislike for the water-jump, which be has only to jump once, Glenotus will be in strong demand, as he is likely to take it more kindly in a field. Next to him, Kendal may be the best supported. The Thames Plate haß attracted a good field of seventeen. It should bo a fine betting race, as it bears a very open aspect. The favourite may come from Day Guard, In the Shade and Hipo. There are only seven acceptors for the Parawai Handicap. On first day form it should be a good race between Branson, Le C'houcas and Serang. The last-named may make more improvement than either of the others and may start favourite. Levenside, if reserved, may be the popular fancy for the Kauaeranga Handicap. Jn his absence I'iet, Nasaock and Pukerimu may receive most attention. The meeting will conclude with the Farewell Handicap. If reserved for this event Branson would be likely to go out favourite. However, he is also in another race and in his absence Ballymoy 11., Nippy and Quincoma may command most support.

CANTERBURY GOSSir. THE LATEST FOALINGS. [BY TELEGRAFH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. Mr. H. A. Knight has experienced a lot of bad luck at his stud this season.
