NITRATE FOR SOVIET.

PRODUCTION OF EXPLOSIVES. LARGE PURCHASES FROM CHILE. (Received October 26, 5.5 p.m.) Times. LONDON, Oct. 25. There has been an interesting development in the extent of Russia's purchases of Chilean nitrate in recent months. Highgrade quality, which is exclusively used in the production of explosives, is bought in Chile, the finance being arranged in Berlin. It is understood that so far this year 50,000 tons of nitrate have been purchased and more is sought. In 1926 Russia's purchases only totalled 2000 tons, and before the war the maximum was 15,000 tons a year. Even during the war the total bought did not exceed 100,000 tons a year.
