FALCON ISLAND REAPPEARS
VOLCANO IN THE PACIFIC. LABURNUM NOTES ERUPTION DETAILS OF PHENOMENON. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received October 11, 5.2 p.m.) A .and N.Z. SUVA. Oct. 11. The British Agent and Consul at Tonga, Mr. J. S. Neill, received a wireless message from H.M.S. Laburnum on Saturday stating that Falcon Island has reappeared and that the volcano is in eruption. It plays at intervals of about 20 minutes for one minute at a time. From observations the island is 1730 yds. in length, in a north and south direction, and 1430 yds. broad, east and west. The sides slope up gradually to the edge of the crater, which is 305 ft. high. The position accords with charts. The island is about 45 miles north of Nukualofa.
Falcon Island was originally formed by a volcanic eruption on October 14, 1885. Its position in the Pacific was about 20 degrees 20 minutes south by 170. degrees 20 minutes west. ,
