TYPHOON AND TIDAL WAVE.
JAPANESE VISITATION. ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE. RICE CROPS LOST IN FLOODS. HUGE NUMBER HOMELESS. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. A. and N.Z. TOKIO. Sept. 14. Official reports from various prefectural headquarters throughout the eastern section of the Island of Kyushu tell a tale of the devastation of villages on the coast by the typhoon, tidal wave and floods. The damage caused on the rice fields in the area between Nagasaki and Tokio has already sent the prices of rice soaring. Almost all communication with the island was interrupted all last night, but the Government wires are now beginning to work, bringing dependable reports. These lead to the conclusion that the first reports as to the loss of lives were considerably exaggerated. The typhoon, accompanied by torrential rain, has now reached Yokohama and Tokio. Along the south-eastern coast the swollen rivers are flooding thousands of acres of rice fields, where the crops were already ripening. Several thousand people are missing and tens of thousands are homeless. The damage is enormous. Hundreds of fishing boats are missing. CYCLONE IN MEXICO. LARGE DEATH-ROLL FEARED. BREAKERS ROLL FAR INLAND. A. and N.Z.-Sun. NEW YORK, Sept. 14. A message from Nogales, Arizona, says the collapse of telegraph and railway communications with Mexico prevent an accurate estimate of the loss of lives and the damage caused by the hurricane, which has now lasted three days. 'lhe meagre reports to hand indicate that the deaths at Salina Cruz and Manzanillo are very numerous.
Breakers 75ft. high tore across the waterfront at Salina Cruz and rolled far inland. Several ships are missing and fears are felt for the safety of the Mazatalan fishing fleet. •
