SHEARERS' NEW AWARD
WAGES IN AUSTRALIA. SLIGHT INCREASE GRANTED. (Received September 15, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Sept. 15. In the Federal Arbitration Court today Chief Justice Dethridge delivered a new award for shearers. Generally this provides for slight increases on last year s wages. The last award fixed the rate at 40s per 100 sheep. The employers asked for a reduction to 35s and the employees for an increase to 60s. Corresponding reductions and increases were claimed in respect to all other shearing workers. The following rates are fixed under the Dew award: Flock sheep 41s per 100; rams, 425; stud ewes and lambs, 51s 3d. These rates are to apply to all the States except \Vester]i Australia, where tho rate for flock sheep will be 40s. The rates for shed hands are to be £4 2s a week with keep, or £5 12s without keep; boys, £2 lis 6d with keep, or £4 Is 6d without keep; cooks, 8s per man per week for every man cooked for. If there are not sufficient shearers to cater for to bring the rate to £4 12s 6d the employer is to make up the difference. Included in the award is a clause granting station hands a fortnight's holiday for every completed year's service, subject to the employee undertaking to return to his employer's service at the end of his holiday.
