KILLED AT CROSSING.
PASSENGER OF MOTOR-CAR. CAR HURLED AGAINST POST. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. A fatal railway accident occurred this afternoon at a railway crossing a mile west of Kirwee, on the Midland lino, 25 miles from Christchurch, when the Greymouth-Christchurch express collided with a five-seater motor-car. A passenger in the car was killed and tin* driver was seriously injured.
The driver of the car was Arthur Lionel Stewart, a married man, aged about 45, and the passenger was Henry Weir, labourer, aged 40, a married man with three children. Both were residents of Kir wee
The accident occurred as the motor-car was proceeding north toward the crossing, which is not a particularly dangerous one. The express struck the car and hurled it against a telegraph pole. Mr. Stewart received cuts to the face and head and was tiken to the Christclinrch Hospital. His condition is serious. Mr. Weir was killed outright. The body of the car was smashed' to pieces. There were two dogs in the cat at the time. One was killed by the impact and the other had to be destroyed after the accident.
