TAURANGA INTERESTS.

NAMING WATERFRONT ROAD. ELECTRIC POWER CHARGES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Thursday. The Tauranga Borough Council met last, opening. A petition bearing 47 signatures was presented; asking the council to reopen the question of naming the new road on the waterfront. The name of Rawiri Road, in honour of the Maori warrior, Rawiri Puhiraki, was suggested. The Mayor, Mr. B. Dive, vacated (he chair during the discussion and did not vote. The council decided, by six votes to three, not to alter its previous decision to name the road Dive Crescent, in honour of the Mayor. The council agreed to a special order regarding the raising of a loan of £2OOO to provido relief for unemployment, the rate of interest being 5-J per cent., and sinking fund 2 pei cent. The loan is being raised locally. The engineer reported that the Waimapu metal for road work was coming to hand and the relief loan works bad been commenced. It was decided to metal the low-level road along portioi of the waterfront reclamation.

The Beautifying Society advised that the planting of purin trees on a section of Cameron Road haci been completed. The council's approval was sought foi planting puriris and maples* on the reserve north ward of Monmouth Redoubt Authority was granted as asked. It was decided to ask the Government to provide stockyards and a loading bank at the Tauranga railway station The council resolved tha' th necessary steps be taken to metei al 1 large supplies of water in the borough, and that th© matter be referred to the Finance Committee and inspector to report upon. It was agreed to request the Harbour Board to erect an electric light at the railway crossing near the new railway wharf. The Electric-I'nwet Board advised that the council's offer to reduce charges for electric current by 5 per cert, could not be entertained.
