THE CITY COUNCIL.
WIDENING SHORE ROAD. NEW KHYBER PASS RESERVOIR. Hie City Council met last evening, the Mayor, .Mr. G. BaiJdon, presiding. Negotiations with the owners of the strip of land required for the widening of Shore Road, Eemuera, were reported upon by the city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, and the arrangements made were confirmed. The scheme of improvements :n connection with this thorough fa re are being put in hand at once, the sum of £16,000 being involved. Tenders wsU be invited for the work of constructing a new reservoir at Khyber Pass Road and reconstructing the old reservoir. The excavated toil will be used in connection with the shore Road improvement scheme* In the authorised loan proposals a total of £60,000 has been set av.de for this work, including the purchase of land. Consent to the raising of a loan of £30,000 for abattoir purposes had been obtained from the Local Gotreromcnl Loans Board, reported the town clerk. It was decided to proceed with the paving of High Street as soon as the work of demolishing the building at the corner of High Street and Chancery Lane » j completed. The provision of a soda! room at an estimated cost of £l5O for the convenience •J the men employed at the Hoia dam work* was anfnorised. Pending the completion of arrangements bv the Aarkland Fire Board for uutm■n? responsibility for the Avonda!e Fire Brigade, the council sewed to retain control. The brigade was antil recent iv cont rolled by the Avondale Botoogh Cwndl, hut the recent amalgamation of that district with the city ha* made an alteration necessary.
