MOTOR-BODY BUILDERS.

OBJECTION TO PROPOSALS. MINISTER PROMISES INQUIRY. [BY TELEGRAPH, —SPECIAL REPORTER. ] v WELLINGTON. Thursday. Mofccr-body > builders. especially in Christchurch and Wellington, are objecting strongly to the new tariff proposals, as they affect their industry. Their objections were voiced in the" House to-day by Mr. T. M. Wilforri! {Hntt), who said he had been advised • that the proposed tariff would mean th,s closing of factories. The Minister of Customs. Hon. W. Downie Stewart, said he also had received & large number of communications cn the subject. There was obviously a conflict of opinion between the parties interested in the motor trade. . He bad been investigating the subject all the morning, and had had experts called in. One half of them thought the tariff was richt, and the other half that it was not. He was going into the question carefully, but he was not in a position to make a statement at the moment. There would, however', be ample time to consider it. The Minister said he had a recollection that when a slight alteration had been made in the same direction in Canada two years ago. the whole of the bodybuilding factories had closed down, but they had reopened in a dav or two. He did not, however, mean to infer that the same thing would occur here
