BLOW AS TITLE TO LAND.
PROBLEM FOR NATIVE COURT.
An indication of the problems presented to the Native Land Court at its recent Gisborne sittings in determining the titles of ownership of native land on which the To Araroa township is now established, is afforded by the statement of a woman witness that an ancestor, resident near Gisborne, had joined the natives of Matakaoa for the purpose of a raid on another tribe, and had stuck an- implement into the soil in a certain part of the block, this action being the basis of the woman's claim. Countering this declaration, another party declared that the visitor had not claimed the land since he was an ally and not a victorious enemy, and that all he had done was to kill a grasshopper with a blow of his stick. Both sides admitted that some sort of a blow had been struck, a remarkable feature of the case being the comparative fidelity with which traditions concerning the block had been handed down.
