CHIEF AS FILM ACTOR.
THE ROLE OF TE KOOTI. IMPRESSIVE RETURN TO TRIBE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHAEATANE. Friday. Te Pairi Oterangi, chief of the Tuhoe tribe, returned home to Waimana yesterday arrayed in all the glory of an oldfashioned British officer's uniform. Te Pairi left the tribe three weeks ago rather under a cloud to enact the role of Te Kooti in the Te Kooti trail film. Four meetings were held by members of the tribe to persuade the chief to five up the idea of appearing in the Im, but. like a true rangitira, he answered: "Elders, I have given my word to the pakehas. I must keep it." At Whakatane the chief's grey hair and beard were dyed black to represent more fittingly Te Kooti, whom he is said to resemble closely, and the old man wept for fear of the result when lie returned to the tribe. His return yesterday to Waimana, the living image of Te Kooti in a looted uniform, was the occasion for great rejoicing and welcome.
Te Pairi Oterangi is 62 years of age, yet he can outride many of the younger generation. His activity and physical vigour were remarked upon by Whakatane doctors who examined him.
